• We met with Jeff Vansickel and Hal Dennis on February 18 to discuss the evaluation and implementation of their Microsoft Access based program designed to replace the current DOS membership program. A timeline has been developed that, with a successful evaluation, should allow for conversion to be complete on August 1st. • The staff is finalizing preparations for the upcoming dues season. Guidelines were provided in the February newsletter and a checklist is included in the dues packet. Please review them carefully. You can greatly speed up the process of receiving your stickers and passes by following these guidelines. • The sign policy amendment, extending the weekend timeframe for realtor signs, has been extended due to the sluggish economy. The Board will re-evaluate the situation in six months.
DIRECTOR OF SECURITY: Mel Carver
Again, I would like to THANK the Maintenance crew for all their hard work and long hours in trying to keep our Lake roads free from snow and ice. They have spent a lot of hours away from their families to keep our roadways as safe as possible for our community.
Despite all the bad weather, we have had very few accidents. I would like to thank everyone for slowing down and driving according to the road conditions. If the cones are up on Big Mohawk hill, please do not attempt to go up or down the hill until it is open and Maintenance has had a chance to treat it.
Our Independence Day celebration will be on Friday, July 3, 2009. We will again be using the same vendor as last year, so we will have a great fireworks show. With all of the positive feedback from the community on the changes made last year, we will be tweaking some things, but everything will be pretty much the same as last year. There will be no alcohol allowed on the beach areas on the day of the fireworks, Lace and Keno road gates will have Deputies assigned to them so they can stop any possible illegal entry and REACT units will be handling traffic control. You will need to have your guest lists turned into the gate guards at least two weeks prior to July 3, 2009. Due to a lack of space, we will have a complete outline in next month’s newsletter.
Remember: no matter how small it may seem to you, please report any suspicious activity to our Deputies so it can be investigated.
I would like to congratulate Deputy John Lewis on his promotion to a full-time officer position here at the Lake. We are looking forward to working with him in his new assignment.
Deputy’s Report
MONTHLY REPORT FOR JANUARY, 2009
Our Lake Mohawk Deputies provided 4 community service calls this month. For the month our Deputies patrolled 2365 miles, consumed 203 gallons of fuel in the cruisers. For the month our Deputies logged 515 hours.
The following incidents were reported to the Carroll County Sheriffs/Mohawk Post:
1 – Phone Harassment 1 – Criminal Mischief (East Mohawk/San Chez area) 2 - Incidents
I would like to congratulate Deputy Lewis on his promotion to full time status. Deputy Lewis has served here with dedication and loyalty and I am pleased that he has accepted this position. Deputy Lewis has served this community since 2006 and I look forward to working with him in his new position. I would also like to welcome a new deputy to our department. Deputy Dowdell is a fine officer and has many years experience working with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Dowdell will be a great asset to not only this department, but this community as well. Welcome aboard Deputy Dowdell!
I would also like to thank all our gate guards who are busy this month putting together dues packets. You all do an outstanding job, and with this busy season it can really be quite hectic. Being a guard for this great community can be difficult and your efforts do not go unnoticed. Again, thank you for all you do and for serving this community with such dedication.
Once again, a big thank you to our maintenance department for their numerous and tiring hours of plowing. This winter has been a difficult and dangerous one where driving is concerned and their countless hours are very much appreciated. Please use caution driving when the road conditions are bad. Slow down and stay on your side of the roadway. There were a couple of close calls from vehicles traveling left of center and almost colliding with the blade of the snow plows. This puts our guys in harms way swerving to avoid a possible collision; and the blade of the plow could cause serious injury to a motorist.
Lace and Keno Gates: We have had numerous complaints from our property owners of misuse of our gates. Additionally our property owners wish to have these gates monitored more closely for any violators. So in response to your concerns, please be advised that our department will be monitoring our gates more closely. Anyone wishing to have a guest come in must have them called in to the main gate. An individual that is not a property owner will be subject to arrest for criminal trespass. Please do not advise your guests to gain entry at our back gates, or wait yourself to let them in. You, the property owner, will be subject to fines and your guest could be subject to arrest.
Reminder: The following dates have been scheduled for the 2009 Boating Course: April 18th, May 16th, and June 13th. The cost for the class is $20.00 and includes all classroom materials and lunch. Cost for class must be paid in advance and is not refundable. Class starts promptly at 8:00am and finishes at 5:00pm. Reminder: ANYONE born ON or AFTER JANUARY 1, 1982, MUST HAVE A VALID OBEC Certification in order to operate watercraft in the State of Ohio. We have had numerous adults that are not required to have this certification, attend our classes. They have stated that they walk away with more knowledge and understanding of watercraft safety and laws, and would recommend this course to anyone who enjoys recreational boating. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sergeant Tokash or Deputy Lewis at 330-863-1053.
Important Notice: The first tornado siren drill for the year will be conducted on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 9:50AM.

LAKE HARVESTING We are continuing the process of determining the feasibility of starting a Weed Harvesting Program at Lake Mohawk. An informational meeting is scheduled to take place Saturday, February 28th at 10am in the Lake Mohawk Golf Club clubhouse. Joe Jacko, committee chairman will report his findings. Martin Miesko, of Natureworks, our weed treatment contractor will also attend and provide his input. This meeting, together with budget responsibility, will provide our Board of Directors and Management the information needed to decide the direction of our lake's future. Any interested property owner can attend and provide us with their opinion.. I also encourage my fellow Board Members/Officers to attend. Thanks to the Golf Club for allowing us to use their facilities.
LAKE MANAGER: Scott Noble
• The staff is prepared to begin our annual dues season. As in the past, the office will be closed on Tuesday and Thursday from March 10th through April 9th. Dues packets are processed in the order they are received. Please do not come to the office and expect to process your packet at that time. • Changes to the Association Constitution – any proposed changes to the Constitution must be submitted 45 days prior to the Annual Meeting. This means that those wishing to propose a change must submit the documentation no later than March 18th. Section 24 of the Constitution outlines the requirements to submit a proposed change. • For members of this community interested in serving on the Board of Directors, applications are available at the Administrative office. The positions available this year are President, Secretary, Director of Roads and Maintenance and Director of Lake and Conservation Management. • Just a reminder, the Road Moratorium for contractors vehicles is in effect until May 1st. Only the Board of Directors can lift the limitations early or grant a variance to the code. • Seawall requirements – all waterfront property is required to have a seawall to prevent continual erosion in the lake. Inspections will be conducted and violators are subject to a penalty until compliance is met. • With the creation of committees to research the prospect of weed harvesting and clubhouse upgrades, it should remind us that the need to maintain and improve a community like ours is great. A large amount of resources, both financial and through volunteerism is necessary. The Association is always looking for new ways to generate revenue. If you have any ideas, please let us know. Your suggestions are always welcome.
