DIRECTOR OF SECURITY:  Mel Carver

I would like to thank the Brown Twp. Fire Dept., the Fish Club, and the community for making the benefit pancake breakfast for fire victim Steve Beltz another big success.  To everyone who donated money at the office or other items “Thank You”.  We really are lucky to live in such a GREAT community.

I also would like to thank school Superintendent Connie Griffin for taking time out of her busy schedule to attend last months board meeting to show her support in our attempt to slow down the school busses and to clear up any misconceptions.

If our lake should freeze this year remember the old saying “there is no such thing as SAFE ice”.  If you venture onto the ice have a ice pick, screw driver or something with a sharp point to stick into the ice to help pull you out should you fall in.  Also, if you are on the ice at night maker sure you carry some kind of light and have a light on your four wheelers etc.

As you are aware of Capt. Moyer is retiring after many years of hard work and dedication to this community.  I have received numerous inquiries as to how and who will pick the Captain’s replacement.  I would like to quote a paragraph directly out of the Lake Mohawk employee manual, section 111 (B).  “All employees are hired, assigned, transferred, promoted, demoted, lay offs or discharged by recommendation from the Lake Manager.  All hires, promotions, demotions, lay offs and discharges require board approval.”  Hopefully this will clear up some of the rumors around the Lake.

Start making your plans to attend Capt. Moyer’s retirement party Sat., Jan. 24th, 2009 at St. Francis Xavier Hall.  You may contact the main office at 330-863-1031 for further information.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally “THANK” Capt. Moyer for his dedication to this community over the years.  You have set the standard high and will be hard to replace.  It has been a pleasure working with you as the Director of Security for the past couple of years.  Congratulations and Best of Luck on your retirement!!

Deputy’s Report
Our Lake Mohawk Deputies provided 4-community service calls this month. For the month our Deputies patrolled 2422 miles, consumed 224 gallons of fuel in the cruisers.  For the month our Deputies logged 505.5 hours.

The following incidents were reported to the Carroll County Sheriffs/Mohawk Post:

2 – Incidents
1 – House Fire
1 – Fatality

All the deputies would like to wish you and your’s a safe and fun filled New Year.  With the New Year comes the potential for nasty weather conditions.  Please be safe while driving on the roadways, leave earlier for work if needed and maintain a distance from those ahead of you if the roads are ice and/or snow covered.  Let’s start this New Year off right….drive safely and cautiously.

The lake should start to freeze over (weather permitting).  Please use extreme caution when venturing out on the ice.  If you have a cell phone carry it with you, but don’t rely upon your cell phone working.   Let a family member, friend, or neighbor know when you plan to go on the ice and when you will be returning home.  Don’t forget to call them upon your return.  Should you fail to notify them of your return a search will be implemented.  Your safety is our first priority.

The following tentative dates have been scheduled for the 2009 Boating Course:  April 18th, May 16th, and June 13th.  We will be confirming these dates at a later time in the newsletter, so please be aware and reserve your spot early, as we fill up quickly.  Reminder:  ANYONE born ON or AFTER JANUARY 1, 1982, MUST HAVE A VALID OBEC Certification in order to operate watercraft in the State of Ohio.  We have had numerous adults that are not required to have this certification, attend our classes.  They have stated that they walk away with more knowledge and understanding of watercraft safety and laws, and would recommend this course to anyone who enjoys recreational boating.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Captain Moyer or Deputy Tokash at 330-863-1053.

This will be my last report as Head of Security.  It has been a pleasure serving and getting to know you all.  May God bless you and thank you for all your kindness throughout my tenure.

COMMITTEES –
FISHERIES / WEED HARVESTER CMTE
I recently continued communications with Mike Weygand from Brown’s Lake in Wisconsin. Mike Weygan is the Lake Conservation Manager and oversees the weeds harvesting program at Browns Lake. Browns Lake is a 490 acre property owners association similar in size to Lake Mohawk. This lake, like ours shares an excellent balance of water skiers and boaters as well as a class “A” fishing lake for the outdoors man. Mike has been very helpful communicating best practices with me and has provided the budgeted vs. actual expenses for the 2007 and 2008 harvesting seasons. This kind of information will help us make an educated decision regarding possible implementation of a weed harvesting program at Lake Mohawk. Mike’s harvesting team consists of high school students and retired property owners who live at Brown’s Lake. One big difference between Brown’s Lake and Lake Mohawk is that the only chemical application is done to the property owners dock space and not the entire water shed. A list of property owners who wish to have there dock space treated is taken yearly and treatments are done accordingly. He explained that about 1/3 of the property owners do not treat there dock space. The cost for the dock treatment is $20.00 per year. This format would be a definite cost saving for the association. The mind set at Browns Lake is a Green Environment.  I explained to him how we treat our water shed and it is looked at as being rather radical. Mike explained the immediate benefits and the long term benefits to a weed harvesting program. Property values increase with a green environment and are used as a selling tool by local realtors.  Harvesting prevents the dying and noxious weeds from infesting Brown Lakes shores and boat docks, thus keeping the water clear all year long. Preservation of fresh water is one of our most valuable natural resources. I intend to meet with Nature Works along with Scott Noble and Scott Moushey to discuss this year’s application of chemicals, until we can institute a harvesting program here at Lake Mohawk. My goal is not to be rid of Nature Works completely, but to spot treat areas of concern if our weed harvester is unable to keep up. Chemical applications in smaller portions will allow fish to escape the oxygen depleted water thus, preventing the fish from becoming stressed and possibly dying as experienced this year. The LMBV virus turns on and kills adult fish when they become stressed. I believe we can save money as well as improve the quality of the water for everyone who enjoys our lake. - Joe Jacko

OPEN FORUM:
Lot: 55 - Last month Mel Carver reported on Capt. Moyer’s retirement.  I served on the Board that hired Deputy Tokash per the request of Capt. Moyer. At the time, Capt. Moyer was our only full time employee in Security.  At the request of Capt. Moyer, the Board considered and approved the hiring of Deputy Robin Tokash with the understanding she would be trained by Capt. Moyer and ultimately qualified to take over in the Capt’s absence and eventual retirement.

I believe that Deputy Tokash has served this Community with dedication and respect.  I encourage you to call your Board Members in support of Robin Tokash to serve as Capt. Moyer’s successor as the Board makes its decision to fill this position.  The Board’s phone numbers are located in your newsletter.

Lot 726 – Dick, I didn’t think you would really do it!  Congrats!!  I did have a concern in Bay 6 area thefts etc.  Have they been really watching this area, because this seems to be going on since April or so.  I am very concerned.  Any leads as to who is doing this?  We really need to focus on this area along with the rest of the lake.
